Clothes that are not built around a number that stopped making sense decades ago.

What if clothing was not built around your waist?

The waist measurement is at the centre of how almost every garment is constructed. It is the anchor point from which lengths are calculated, proportions are determined, and fit is assessed. It is also one of the most variable, most age-sensitive, and most problematic measurements in a woman's body.

It changes with age. It changes with life. It is different in a short torso than a long one — and yet the industry applies it as if it were a constant. The result is a wardrobe full of clothes that sit wrong, ride up, pull across, and bunch at the back. Not because of your body. Because of the assumption baked into the pattern.

Nowaist is a clothing line being designed without the waist as a fixed measurement point. It is built to solve two specific, documented, and largely ignored problems that affect the majority of women over 50.

01

The torso length problem

Standard garments are drafted with a fixed waist position — typically calibrated for a medium torso. A woman with a short torso finds the waist sits too low, the bodice is too long, and the hemline is wrong. A woman with a long torso finds the opposite. Neither is unusual. Both are completely ignored by standard grading. Nowaist is being designed to accommodate torso length as a variable, not a fixed assumption.

02

The age and measurement problem

The waist changes. Not because something has gone wrong, but because the body redistributes as it ages — in ways that are entirely normal and entirely unacknowledged by an industry still grading for the body of a 22-year-old. The waist measurement a woman carried at 30 is not the waist measurement she carries at 55. Designing as if it were is not just wrong — it produces the daily frustration of clothes that almost fit, and never quite do.
